Digging for insights on foreigners living in Japan from some of the most prominent figures
by Jeff Kingston

AT HOME ABROAD: The Contemporary Western Experience in Japan, by Adam Komisarof. Reitaku University Press, 2012, 251 pp., ¥3,570 (hardcover)

Donald Richie, prolific author of more than 40 books and longtime contributor to The Japan Times, died in February at age 88. April 17 was his birthday, so this review pays tribute by sharing some of the insights he passed on during an interview, one of 12 in this book, conducted four years ago.

reading Mark D. West's Secrets, Sex and Spectacle: The Rules of Scandal in Japan and the United States. Chicago: Univ. of Chicago Press, 2006.

damn interesting! and high-profile! (the nickname "Beat" Takeshi became a completely new meaning and I
really wonder how this is NOT connected to mob-ties - just saying...)

although I am slow since I'm not used to such an amount of law-related vocabulary, but I manage even without a dictionary (thanks to reading on japansubculture.com) and that makes me weirdly proud

I am now intersted in those:
Law in Everyday Japan: Sex, Sumo, Suicide, and Statutes. Chicago: Univ. of Chicago Press, 2005.

and even more since it's newer:

Lovesick Japan: Sex, Marriage, Romance, Law. Ithaca: Cornell Univ. Press, 2011.

his online-bibliography notes some interestig articles as well:
